- Scripture: “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” (James 3:17)
- From Wise To Do Evil
We're just encouraging ourselves in this study to say, "Okay, let me step back for just a moment and really be truthful with myself and where I am. Am I justifying many of these methods that I'm using?" And you're saying, "Pastor, we all have to work. We're to work and live by the sweat of our brow." We're not saying don't go to work. We're not saying to isolate yourselves from the world. We're saying don't become proficient in the world. We're saying don't seek the treasures of the world, its wisdom, its methodology. We're talking about cutting back, becoming more simple, getting more quiet time, hearing what the Spirit of God is saying to the church in this hour. And what He's saying is this, "Come out, come out, come out from among them. Don't touch the unclean thing, and I will receive you" (2 Corinthians 6:17). Are we saying, "Oh, it doesn't hurt to camp here. It doesn't hurt to pitch the tent toward Sodom. I'm not actively involved. I'm just gazing upon them. I'm just admiring their wealth. I'm just admiring their proficiency, their dedication, their skills. It's amoral. There is nothing wrong with it."? Seek things above! If you're going to gaze on something, gaze at the things that are above. The world's wisdom is dangerous. It gives us power. It gives us independence. It brings us security. It's what killed Solomon. It's what almost killed Lot. It was the main thing that God had to drive out of Job. Job, in all of his wisdom and his understanding and his ability to argue against God's methods, and finally, he came to the place of putting his hand over his mouth, didn't he?
Father hasn't told me to do this, or I believe, I hope, that I would. I hope that I would! But if Father was to speak to me today and say, "I want you to walk away from everything. I want you to sell everything you have. I want you to walk away from it. I want you to absolutely start, today, living by faith alone, with nothing. Sell it all, give it to the poor, and come and follow me." I wonder how many "wise" reasons I could come up with not to do that. Could you all come up with some? Would you all help me if I needed that? If I ever have to argue against God, could you help me come up with some arguments? Which ones have you used? What works best in your life?
There's a wisdom that's from above. "Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good [lifestyle] his works with meekness of wisdom" (James 3:13). Let him live a holy life with a meek and quiet spirit. "Come and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly" (Matthew 11:29). Whose works are with meekness of wisdom. A wisdom that doesn't have self-confidence accompanying it, a wisdom of humility, a wisdom that doesn't answer to reason. The wisdom of God that is pure and peaceable and gentle and easily intreated and full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy (James 3:17). This wisdom that is, in all ways, pointing to the glory of God. God is the source. God is the recipient.
So, there are two wisdoms, the one that's from above, and the one that is from below that always generates strife and confusion and every evil work (James 3:16). You see, the moment that you bring worldly wisdom into the community, it's starting to bring strife. It's offensive to children of light; it's offensive to the truth. Every schism we've had here, every family that has left here, is because they were offended by light and truth, because they couldn't get us to bow to that one little twist of worldly wisdom that they wanted to apply to these circumstances. Do you think it might only take one, just one thing, to cause us to turn our backs and walk into the world's wisdom? How much of the world's wisdom do you think we have to embrace to remove us from the wisdom of God and the kingdom of God? What do you think the percentage would be? It's not a percentage. It's one! One decision against the Word of God, one elevation of the world's wisdom and methods and making it equal with God, is having another god before Him. And so, here we are. As we're looking at this subject, and we're seeing, then, the vitalness of apprehending the wisdom of God, and knowing what's opposing it. We do not want to be ignorant. What's opposing God's wisdom is another parallel kingdom, another wisdom.
