Who is Building Your House?

Look over at Proverbs 19:21 for just a moment. "There are many devices in a man's heart…" I know within myself I have many devices, many, many. I'm one of those guys that has a lot of ideas, a lot of plans. I was reading my first grade report card recently. We're remodeling and so we have to clean everything out because of the mess and all of this stuff. It's a nightmare. And so we're going through that and in the midst of this throwing away papers and cleaning out stuff that's accumulated for 30 years, I came across these report cards again. So I sat down and I began to read the comments of my teacher. Now this was before the psychologists put a name on this but I was reading this thing and thought, "Hmm, I had ADD." And I think that I do, whatever it is. It talked about how involved I got, how I was able to comprehend everything that was going on. I was involved in it fully. I did it absolutely with all of my heart, but I was always distracted because I wanted to do other stuff. I was a multi-tasker. And I'm always ready to go on to the next thing. Now, I've disciplined myself to finish things, but it's not what I like to do. I like to start things and I love to keep stuff stirred up. I like to have three or four things going on one time, full speed. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? A man's heart, then, devises many things, "…nevertheless the counsel of the LORD shall stand." As years have gone by, I've come to more of a rest. I have to admit that. Now, I don't know if know if it's that I'm maturing spiritually or just getting older. My energy level, everybody that chases me says it hasn't diminished very much.

So it is probably that I'm getting some older, but I think that I would like to attribute it to maybe getting more spiritual, maybe adding a little maturity and looking for the mind of God with the rest, not having to stay busy. Now some of you would look around and say, "Dear Lord, what did you call this last year?" But, I mean busy just about what I am envisioning and trying to be able to say, "Father, what, really, is Your heart at this time? What do You have for us as a people?" Because it is "…the counsel of the Lord [that] shall stand" and unless "…the LORD build the house, they labour in vain…" (Psalm 127:1). Now I'm talking generally about the ministry here, but what about in your lives? Is God building your house? We're all the temple of God, aren't we? Is God building your house or are you building your house? Are you envisioning where you should be six months from now spiritually? Are you measuring yourself today by others? What is the process that's taking place in your own spiritual life? Can I share something with you? No matter what you do, it's in vain unless God is the source of it." And can I share something with you? He has a plan for your life. He has a plan for that building you dragged in here tonight-your bodies-that are the temple of the Holy Ghost. Have you gotten quiet enough to hear what God's plan is for you? You can devise all kind of things, but have you heard the Word of the Lord as it pertains to how He wants to place you in the body? If it was up to you, do you think you would have placed yourself differently? Some of us here would say, "Well, yeah. I've heard there some really nice churches in Hawaii." There are, but where has God chosen to put you? Within the community that we happen to be in, where has God chosen to place you as a gift that is here for one reason, to glorify God? You are here for another reason; the first reason is to glorify God. The second reason is to edify the body, to build others up that are around you. All that we have, as we devise our plans and what we think is best for us, and what's best for our children, and what school should they be in and how to prepare them-how can I get them into the finest colleges in the nation, etcetera? We've dealt with this in times in the past so I won't spend a lot of time on it. You can make all kind of plans, but the counsel of the Lord will stand. Find the heart of God in your life and begin to rest. Begin to rest in the fact that you do not have to know everything; the Spirit of God will order your steps.
