- Scripture: “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.” (Psalm 27:13)
- From God Is Good
The goodness of God. The word "goodness" is very interesting. When we say, "God is good," we are really saying, "God shows favor and goodwill toward me." God is always showing favor and goodwill. "Well, some of this stuff doesn't look very favorable." All of the adversities that we face in life have one purpose behind them: Christlikeness. All of the adversities that we face in this life have one purpose behind them: that we be conformed to the image of Jesus, that we die to self. "I don't understand." You never will. His ways are higher than our ways. "That's a cop out just to say that to somebody that's hurting." No, it's the truth! The renewed mind is able to reach up and grasp those things. Psalm 27:13 says, "I had fainted unless I had believed…" Get that word, "unless I had believed." Without faith it's impossible to please God! Faith calls things that are not as though they were! "My baby just died! This is the goodness of God." That's faith. You want to talk about faith? Faith isn't praying for somebody and getting them healed. Faith is not just multiplying the loaves and the fishes. Faith is being able to look into that casket and see that little baby and say, "God's good."
I wouldn't be able to make it through this dilemma called life unless I believe, call things that are not as though they were, unless I believe to see the goodness of God in the land of the living! God's good! He gives us all things that pertain to life and godliness.
We don't always like to even talk about this because we're saying, "Well, you know, if I say, 'Amen,' to all of this, what's going to come then? What's going to come to prove me in this?" Fenelon mentioned the same thing in his book. There's some great counsel in that one book (Seeking Heart) that he wrote, but he only writes one page about himself. He said, "I just want you to know the reason my counsel may seem a little different than it normally is it's because I myself am in a huge trial right now." You can write volumes about helping people out of their trials, now it's your turn, right? He said, "The thing I fear most is I've been under this trial." But he said, "The thing that I fear is it's just about over, but I don't know if I should get excited because I think God's going to be putting me back in another one." That's paraphrased. Anybody know what I'm talking about?
"I would have fainted unless I had believed to see the goodness of God in the land of the living." God is good and His mercies endure forever. Stop trying to figure Him out. His ways are not your ways. His ways are higher than your ways. He's given us this book of promises that reveals Himself, that reveals His will, but I want to tell you something: it does not reveal His specific guidance for your life. These are all general revelations of who God is, what His promises are to us, but He will never lay your life out before you because He demands that you walk by faith and not by sight. Without faith it's impossible to please God.
Sufficient to the day are the evils thereof. Just believe Him now in the land of the living. Believe to see His goodness right now. What is His goodness? Here's His goodness: you're in a trial. Here's His goodness and He's standing by you! He said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you. You go in the fire pit, I'll be with you there. You go in the pit with the lions, I'll be with you there!" I want you to know something: there's always a fourth man in the furnace! God's good! I'd rather be in the fire, in the furnace with God, than in the penthouse without Him.
