- Scripture: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” (Psalm 23:6)
- From God Is Good
What do you think: are you content? The cause of discontentment is that you don't believe the love of God for you. You don't believe that Jehovah is Jehovah Jireh. We miss the sovereignty aspect of God. We want to instruct Him like Job did. We're not content to be part of the twelve. In our ambition, we want to argue who's the greatest. Does anybody in here have a little ambition that needs to die? I'm not talking about ambition for the kingdom, I'm not talking about ambition to embrace the cross and die to yourself. I'm talking about ambition to exalt yourself. When is it enough?
We realize that the goodness of God is enough. When you truly embrace the presence of God, it's enough. We've all had those moments. Do you remember the times that you've embraced God in prayer and intercession and it was enough? Time didn't mean anything. All of the plans for the day didn't mean anything. All of the ambitions for down the road didn't mean anything because you've got God. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Don't you want to live there? Do you know when you live there you can walk down the street, they can say all manner of evil against you, they can slap you on the cheek, they can mock you, and God's enough!
Godliness with contentment is great gain. This makes us richer than anything that men can comprehend in the natural. "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever" (Psalm 23:6). The closest we can get to the house of God in this life is to realize the goodness and the mercy of God on a daily basis. It brings peace. It brings satisfaction. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He's given me goodness and mercy and it will satisfy me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever! God is good! All the time!
Psalm 27, verse 13 tells us, as the psalmist is writing again, he says, "I [would have] fainted unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living." Have you ever been in those trials where you felt like you were going to faint? "Lord, I don't know if I'm going to make it through this one. Lord, I don't understand." "Can you explain to me why my baby died?" I can't tell you in all the years when I've sat with people, they're looking you in the face and they say, "Why did my spouse walk out on me?" How many times I've sat and looked at people and they said, "If God is good, why is my baby dead?"
The questions that we have to deal with over and over again as we deal with the human condition-I'm talking about people who have been believers for most of their lives that ask these questions. When you face the real issues of life, you better have your mind renewed, amen? You better have your mind made up going in that God is good and that He loves you and that He's given you everything that pertains to life and godliness. It's already in there. The Holy Spirit is able to rise up and bring to remembrance all of these things, the Scripture says, that Jesus has spoken to us. God is just as good in the pit and in the prison as He is on the throne. As Joseph began to learn that, he was able to forgive his brothers. He was able to move in humility in the place that God put him. His ascent to the throne was not without trials. We don't know exactly what happened to his feet, but the shackles crippled him. His brothers had betrayed him, betrayed in the house of Potiphar, betrayed in the prison-but God…! But God was with Joseph.
I want to share something with you: He's with you right now! No matter what circumstance you're in, God is with you and He is good! Because He has one purpose for you: the throne. We will be raised up and we will be seated together with Him. Get the eternal perspective. This isn't our home. This is not all there is to life. This life is as a vapor and eternal life is coming! We realize the goodness of God. To be content is to be satisfied, to have it suffice, to be enough.
