  • Scripture: “Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?” (Proverbs 20:24)
  • From God's Sovereign Goodness

God's sovereign and He has the right to change our course at any moment. When we begin to realize that, it brings about a rest. It takes away that natural uneasiness. Does anybody here not like change? You don't like to change? How many of you really have trouble changing when everything is going very well? I've shared the story many times so I won't belabor the point. I could not, in the natural, have had anything going better for me than when I was living on my scholarship-a young kid having everything that I wanted-and God invaded my life. I surrendered my life completely to Him and He led me in a completely different direction than my whole life had been set for. You see, that happened instantly upon my salvation and so that's how I thought following Jesus was supposed to be. I lost my home that I was living in and lived in my car. I thought that's what being a Christian was supposed to be. Because God had changed my life and He was now Lord, I couldn't do what I had always planned my whole life. All of these things that I had in the natural that were benefits and blessings and luxuries, and now I'm living in a car, but I thought that's how it was supposed to be. See, too many of us start off in our pursuit of the Lord thinking that it is all about blessings, and if you accept Jesus, you'll get a raise, and everything you touch is going to prosper and all of your family will get saved. Those are blessings of God. But it didn't take long in reading the Scriptures to see that a plan was already set for my life and God had a cross for me.

You see, this comprehensive teaching on the cross that we've done in recent years isn't the first time I have taught that and it's surely not the first time that I've experienced it. "A man's heart devises his way: but the LORD… [will set things right];" whatever it takes to bring about lordship in our lives. Whatever it takes to bring ultimate glory to God, He will set that course for you, and we rejoice in that. You want God's glory, don't you? And so we delight in it. All I'm saying is just do not get caught up in that course that you have set and think that it is truth and that God will bless every aspect of it, because you do not have a clue what God has for your life at this moment. So let's make our focus, not on the course, but let's make our focus on the sovereignty of God and the goodness of God and the power of God to bring about His own glory in a way that He chooses. That's what this thing is all about. Turn over to Proverbs Chapter 20 for just second, and we'll look at these foundational principles of the Lord working His counsel in our lives and setting things right when we get off-course. Another way of seeing this, too, is when it talks about God setting things right and this is always comforting to me. You cannot mess things up so badly that God cannot get you back on course. He's sovereign. I don't care how crooked you're making the road and how far off-center it is, God can set it right. He has that power and He has that desire because He works all things, even your messes, together for good to those that love Him and are called according to His purpose.

The Spirit of God says to us, "Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?" (Proverbs 20:24). "Don't worry about it if you don't understand what's going on," is what is what He says. "I'm behind this thing. I'm setting the course."

He's sovereign. Our steps are ordered, and God is good and we need to thank Him for everything that He is involving us in for His glory. We get to be agents to bring glory to God as our heart is submitted to Him. Look at Proverbs 16, verse 33, "The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD." "Lord, is this the one that I am supposed to marry?" What this is telling us is trust in God and not in your own understanding. Trust in God and not in your own ability. Trust in the fact that God is intimately orchestrating His will in your life. Just begin to rejoice in that and understand the goodness of God as all these areas are being worked out. He sets your course right to glorify Himself. He orders the steps of a good man and all of these things are working together for good to those that love God and are called according to His purposes. We want to honor the Lord for that great free gift that Father's given us.
