  • Scripture: “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ…” (Ephesians 5:19-20)

Ephesians 4:30 says, "Grieve not the Holy Spirit." He goes into the next chapter and he makes this statement. He says in verse 17 of Chapter 5, "Be not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is." A lot of people want to know what God's will is. Here is the will of the Lord, "Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit."

Being filled with the Spirit is not all about just speaking in tongues. Thank God for our prayer language. We do not minimize it. We are surely not ashamed. Tragically, much of the professed Pentecostal church today is becoming ashamed of the moving of the Holy Spirit. They want it to be done in the back room, maybe in a prayer room, preferably at home. The Holy Spirit didn't come in a vacuum. The Holy Spirit didn't come in secrecy. He came in the upper room! They poured out into the streets. "How is this that we hear every man speaking in our own language, this glory and excellency and the boasting in the greatness of God?" Be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Then look what he says, part of what being filled with the Holy Spirit does is speaking. We are talking about the tongue; aren't we? "Speaking (Holy Ghost-filled, speaking) to yourselves in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts unto the Lord; giving thanks always for all things unto [your] God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;" (Ephesians 5:19-20).

So what should we be talking about? What are the words that should be flowing out of your mouth? Doesn't the Scripture say that out of our innermost being there should be rivers of living water? Tragically, we have been speaking death and confusion and sedition, heresies, and blasphemies! But the Holy Spirit has come to cause us to lift our voices and make God big! Do you understand that for eons and eons and eons and eons it is going to be, "Holy, holy, holy!" That might go on for ten, fifteen, twenty, one hundred million years before we go on to something else. God is to be glorified, the fruit of our lips giving thanksgiving to His name! When we get together, let us begin to share what we are thankful for with our brothers and sisters. This is what He is saying to us right here, "Giving thanks always." "Filled with the Holy Spirit." The thing that will keep corrupt communication from coming out of our mouths is to be more filled with the Spirit, to stir up that gift that is in you with the laying on of hands.

Our days should be spent with our minds for every moment possible focused on the eternal. "Singing and making melody in your hearts unto the Lord." We begin to see that it is not enough for us to try to put our hands over our mouths and not say bad things. We need our hearts purified. We need our spirits filled!
